Course Description

This course is a survey of England from the beginnings of Roman occupation near the time of Christ to the Glorious Revolution in 1688. While this class will use a political framework to tie the course together, economic, social and religious aspects of Medieval and Early Modern England will also be explored. Students will be encourage to participate in discussions throughout the course and will have the opportunity do to further research on topics which interest them.

Course Objectives

1. To gain a better understanding of the crucial developments in English history as it transformed from Britannia to the English Realm and which ultimately influenced the development of United States.

2. To use topics in English history as a springboard to exploring issues in our own society, both as citizens of a secular state and as Christians.

3. To improve reading, writing, speaking, and researching skills.

Attendance and participation 10%
Discussion Papers 20%
Annotated Bibliography  20%
Mid-Term 25%

Late Policy

Discussions will be discounted 2 points for each day after the due date unless in cases of excused absence  

Exams and papers will be marked down 5% per day unless in cases of excused absence
